Anchor text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink. It's one of the clearest relevance signals in SEO — both for the page being linked TO (what is this about?) and the overall semantic context of a site's linking patterns.

Natural Anchor Text Distribution

For external backlinks, a natural profile includes mostly branded and partial-match anchors with a smaller proportion of exact match. Sites with 80%+ exact-match anchors look manipulated to Google's Penguin algorithm.

Google's Penguin update (launched 2012, integrated into core algorithm since 2016) targets over-optimized anchor text patterns as a spam signal. If you're building links, vary your anchor text aggressively.

Internal Link Anchors

Internal links have more lenient anchor text rules — it's natural for you to use keyword-rich anchors on your own site because you control the context. Descriptive internal anchors are encouraged and help Google understand your content relationships.

How Hugo Checks Anchors

Hugo's Link Analysis category evaluates the proportion of generic anchor text ("click here", "read more", "here") in internal links. A high proportion of generic anchors is flagged as a medium-impact warning — these links pass little relevance signal to their targets.

Fixing Generic Anchors

Review your internal links and replace generic anchors with descriptive ones that include relevant keywords. Instead of "Click here to learn about our services", write "Explore our SEO analysis services". This takes minutes but improves internal equity flow significantly.
