📋Meta Description Best Practices
How to write meta descriptions that boost click-through rates, when Google uses them vs ignores them, and the optimal length and structure for different page types.
The meta description is the short paragraph beneath your title in search results. It's NOT a direct ranking factor — Google confirmed this in 2009. But it dramatically affects click-through rate (CTR), which is why it matters enormously.
Does Google Use Your Meta Description?
Not always. Google rewrites meta descriptions in approximately 62% of searches (ahrefs data). Google generates its own snippet when it believes its version better matches the user's query. Your description is most likely to be used for branded searches and navigational queries.
Even though Google sometimes ignores them, meta descriptions control the snippet for a significant portion of queries. Social platforms (LinkedIn, Slack unfurling) also use them. Always write one.

What Makes a Good Description
- Include the primary keyword naturally — Google bolds matching query words in the snippet.
- Clearly state the VALUE the user gets from clicking.
- Use active voice and action verbs: "Learn how to...", "Get a free...", "Find out..."
- Match the search intent: informational queries need different descriptions than commercial ones.
- Avoid clickbait — your bounce rate (if users feel misled) signals dissatisfaction to Google.
- End with a soft CTA if natural: "See how it works", "Start free today"
