Technical SEO ensures that search engines can discover, crawl, and index your content correctly.[1] Think of it as the foundation — if technical SEO is broken, no amount of content optimization will help. Hugo runs 7+ technical checks worth 18% of your main page score.

HTTPS Security

HTTPS is a confirmed Google ranking signal.[1] Sites without HTTPS are flagged as "Not Secure" in browsers, which dramatically reduces user trust and engagement.[7]

⚠️Critical Impact

This is one of Hugo's critical-impact checks. A failing grade here significantly reduces your overall score. If your site isn't on HTTPS, this should be your top priority.[1]

HTTP Status Codes

🔒TLS HandshakeEncrypt connection
📤HTTP RequestGET /page

CodeStatusSEO Impact
200Pass ✓Page loads successfully — ideal
301/302Warning ⚠Redirect — passes some link equity but adds latency{{2}}
404Fail ✗Not Found — loses all link equity and frustrates users{{2}}
500Fail ✗Server Error — signals unreliability to search engines{{2}}

Server Response Time

Response Time (ms)

500–1500ms
Poor
Over 1500ms
Measured as Time to First Byte (TTFB) — how long until the server starts sending the response. Google uses this as a speed signal.[3] Slow response times hurt both rankings and user experience.

URL Structure

Clean URLs are easier for both users and search engines to understand.[8] Hugo checks for common URL problems:

  • Spaces in the URL path
  • Uppercase characters (URLs should be lowercase)
  • Double slashes (//)
  • Excessively long paths (>115 characters)

Robots.txt & XML Sitemap

Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which pages they can access.[4] Hugo verifies it returns a 200 status and doesn't accidentally block your entire site with Disallow: /.

The XML sitemap helps search engines discover all your pages.[5] Hugo checks for a valid sitemap at /sitemap.xml with proper XML content type.

Meta Robots

The meta robots tag (or X-Robots-Tag header) controls whether search engines index and follow links on your page.[6] Hugo flags pages with noindex as critical failures since they explicitly prevent search engine indexing.
